Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at the Christmas story alongside some passages that talk about the coming Messiah - Jesus - from the Old Testament.

  • 1“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty. 2But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.

  • Standards for church leaders1It is certainly true that anyone who sets his heart on being a leader desires what is honourable.2-3However, he must realise that a church leader has to be above reproach. He is to be faithful to his only wife and have a temperate lifestyle. This means that he will be self-controlled, respectable and certainly not an excessive drinker. He will be gentle, not violent nor argumentative. He will also be hospitable and needs to be a gifted teacher of God's Word.4He will not desire financial riches but will manage his family well, ensuring that his children obey him and show proper respect to others.5How can anyone care properly for God's church if he cannot even manage his own family well?6A recent convert should not be placed in leadership or he might become proud and abuse his position, as the devil did, and fall under judgment as a result.7It is essential for a leader to have a good reputation with those outside the church, so it is clear that he does not yield to the devil's temptations and fall into disgrace.8Those called to serve as deacons are to be men held in high regard by others. They, too, must be people whose word can be trusted, not heavy drinkers nor those who resort to questionable practices for financial gain.9They must be men of genuine faith in the truth who can serve with clear consciences.10They should prove themselves faithful in lesser responsibilities first and when they have demonstrated a godly character, they can be appointed as deacons.11Also their wives must be women who are respected by others; not malicious gossips but temperate and trustworthy in everything they do.12A deacon must also be faithful to his only wife and must manage his children and household well.13Those who have served well in this office will gain great respect from others and will demonstrate considerable confidence because of their great faith in Christ Jesus.14-15I hope to visit you soon, but I put these instructions in writing in case I am delayed; so you will know how people should behave as members of God's household, the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.Jesus' nature16The mystery of Christ's godly nature is undoubtedly great: He appeared in a human body and was shown to be totally acceptable to God when the Spirit came upon Him. He was in the company of angels and has been preached to the nations. People in the world believed Him to be God's Son before He returned to the glory of heaven.

  • S.O.A.P.

    In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
    [O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
    [A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
    [P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

    As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

    Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!
