How to know Jesus

going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at the Christmas story alongside some passages that talk about the coming Messiah - Jesus - from the Old Testament.

  • For the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. A wedding song.1My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. 2You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. 3Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.4In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.5Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet.6Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.7You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.8All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.9Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir. 10Listen, daughter, and pay careful attention: Forget your people and your father’s house.11Let the king be enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.12The city of Tyre will come with a gift, people of wealth will seek your favor.13All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold.14In embroidered garments she is led to the king; her virgin companions follow her— those brought to be with her.15Led in with joy and gladness, they enter the palace of the king. 16Your sons will take the place of your fathers; you will make them princes throughout the land. 17I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

  • Personal greeting1From Paul, made an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Saviour and Christ Jesus who is our hope for the future.2To Timothy, my true son in the faith. May grace, mercy and peace be imparted to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.Prevent men from teaching false doctrine3-4When I entered Macedonia I urged you to stay in Ephesus so that you could command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer, nor indulge themselves in controversies concerning myths and traditions from the past. Such things never enable people to do God's work, which can only be accomplished by faith in Him.5Love is the motive behind this command, the kind of love that comes from a pure heart, is inspired by faith and results from having a clear conscience.6By their senseless talk it is clear that some have strayed from these virtues.7They want to be teachers of the law yet they have no idea what they are talking about, even though they sound so confident. The necessity of the law8We know that the law has good influence when used properly.9But we are also aware that the law cannot make us acceptable to God. It exists to restrain the actions of disobedient and rebellious people, of ungodly sinners, of those who have no regard for what is holy or sacred to God. The law is needed for those guilty of killing their mothers or fathers.10The law is necessary because of murderers, adulterers and perverts, those who trade in human misery, those who lie, cheat and perjure themselves.11It exists for those who teach whatever contradicts the truths of the glorious gospel of our great God, the truth He has entrusted me to proclaim.Jesus came to save sinners12He has given me strength to do this, and I thank Christ Jesus our Lord that He regarded me as being faithful and so appointed me to serve Him in this way.13I used to blaspheme Jesus, persecute the church and was a violent man. Despite this I was shown mercy by God because I had acted in ignorance and unbelief.14God lavished His grace on me so abundantly, together with the faith and love that are only found in Christ Jesus!15This is a truth that everyone needs to believe: Christ Jesus came to this world to save sinners, of whom I regard myself as the worst.16That is why I was shown such great mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might demonstrate the full extent of His patience, as an example that would encourage others to believe in Him and so receive eternal life.17Now to Him, the One who is the eternal King, the immortal, invisible and only true God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. It shall be so!18-20Timothy, my son, in line with the prophecies that have been spoken over your life, I give you these instructions so that by obeying them you may fight the good fight of faith that comes from having a clear conscience. By rejecting these instructions, some have shipwrecked their faith, including Hymenaeus and Alexander. I have handed them over to satan so they will learn not to blaspheme against God.

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
