going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we'll be looking at scriptures on the Holy Spirit and what it means to live devoted and holy. Alongside these passages we'll be reading through Psalm 119 and some of the following Psalms each day.

  • Seven men chosen to serve1As the number of disciples increased, the Greek-speaking Jews complained about the Hebrew-speaking Jews, because their widows were not receiving a fair amount in the daily distribution of food.2So the twelve apostles called a meeting of all the disciples and said: "We should not be involved in these administrative details but should be able to concentrate on preaching and teaching God's Word.3-4So, brothers, select some men from among you who have the reputation of being wise and men of the Spirit. We will hand this responsibility over to them, while we devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word."5Everyone responded well to this proposal. They selected Stephen, who was full of faith and the Holy Spirit, Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas who came from Antioch and was a convert to Judaism.6These seven men were presented to the apostles, who laid their hands on them and prayed for them.7As a result of these changes, God's Word spread further and the number of disciples increased rapidly in Jerusalem. Even a large number of priests became obedient believers.Stephen falsely accused8Stephen, full of God's grace and power, performed extraordinary wonders and miraculous signs among the people.9However, opposition also arose, especially from those who belonged to the so-called Synagogue of the Freed Slaves. These were Jews from Cyrene and Alexandria and the provinces of Cilicia and Asia.10But when they argued with Stephen they had no answers to his wisdom, nor to the anointed words he spoke by the Spirit.

  • S.O.A.P.

    In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
    [O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
    [A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
    [P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

    As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

    Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!
