How to know Jesus

going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at the Christmas story alongside some passages that talk about the coming Messiah - Jesus - from the Old Testament.

  • LUK 1:46-56 Luke 1:46-56
  • TTS 2 Titus 2
  • 46-47Then Mary said: "I glorify the Lord with all my soul, and my spirit rejoices in God, for He is my Saviour.48-49He knows that I am only His humble servant. Yet every future generation will consider me blessed, for the Mighty One has done such great things for me. And His name is Holy!50"He extends His mercy to those who fear Him in every generation.51For He has done mighty deeds through His power, and yet has scattered those whose hearts are proud.52-53He has dethroned rulers and has exalted the humble. He has supplied plentifully for the hungry, but the wealthy He has sent away with nothing.54-55"He has helped His people Israel, for He has continued to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants, just as He promised our forefathers."56Mary remained with Elizabeth for about three months before returning home.

  • Orderly living1But you are to be very different because you teach what is right.2Encourage the older men to live sober lives, being serious, sensible and sound in what they believe, in the way they love and in persevering in obedience.3-5In like manner, older women should have a godly disposition. They should not slander others nor be slaves to drink. Instead, they should teach what is good and right so that they can train the younger women correctly: to love their husbands and children, to be sensible and pure, to be good home-makers who are kind and submissive to their husbands, so that God's Word is not in any way discredited.6In the same way, you are to encourage the younger men to be self-controlled.7-8Show them by your example how to live a good life. Teach with integrity, with depth and with the soundness that cannot be refuted; so that any who oppose the truth may be shamed, having nothing bad to say about us.9Teach workers to obey their employers in every way, seeking to please them and not argue with them.10They are not to steal anything, but are to prove themselves trustworthy, so that they are good examples of the teaching of God our Saviour.11For the saving grace of God has appeared for all men.12-14He teaches us to deny our fleshly desires and lusts so that we might live sober, upright and godly lives in this present time, as we await the fulfilling of the great blessing for which we long, when the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ is revealed, He who sacrificed Himself on our behalf. In doing this, He paid with His own blood to rescue us from all that is sinful, and to make us a people God could possess for Himself, who long to please Him by doing good.15Titus, proclaim these things clearly. Both encourage and correct, using fully the authority given you. And do not allow anyone to despise you!

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
