How to know Jesus

going deeper ...to go further

Daily Bible reading strengthens our relationship with God, nourishes our spirits and equips us to live a fruitful, effective life for Him.

This month we're looking at the Christmas story alongside some passages that talk about the coming Messiah - Jesus - from the Old Testament.

  • LUK 1:5-17 Luke 1:5-17
  • 1TIM 2 1 Timothy 2
  • Birth of John the Baptist foretold5When Herod was king of Judea, there was a certain priest called Zechariah of the priestly order of Abijah, whose wife Elizabeth was also descended from the priestly line of Aaron.6Both lived righteous lives in God's eyes, carefully observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations.7However, they were unable to have children as Elizabeth was infertile, and by then both were very old.8-9When Zechariah's priestly order was fulfilling its duty before God, he was chosen by lot, according to custom, to burn incense before the presence of the Lord in the temple.10While he was doing this the worshippers gathered together outside in prayer.11While in the sanctuary Zechariah saw an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.12-13He was both surprised and terrified, but the angel told him: "Don't be afraid, Zechariah, for God has heard your prayer. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son who you are to call John.14He will give you great joy and delight, and many others will be thankful because the Lord has a great purpose for him.15"He is not to drink wine or any form of alcohol and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from the time of his birth.16He will bring many people of Israel back to the Lord their God. He will prepare the way in the spirit and power of Elijah for the Lord's coming.17He will cause the hearts of fathers to be turned to their children and the disobedient will repent of their sins, and instead will adopt the wisdom of ways that please the Lord. This child is to prepare people for the Lord's coming."

  • Pray for all people1-2First of all, I urge you to pray for all people. Ask for God's mercy to be upon them and pray with thanksgiving, even for kings and those in positions of authority, that we will be able to live in peace, stability and in godliness as His holy people.3Such prayer is good and pleases God our Saviour.4He desires all men to be saved by coming to know the truth.Jesus the mediator between God and man5-6For there is only one God and One who mediates between God and man, Jesus Christ, who was born as a Man and gave Himself as a sacrifice on behalf of all men, to pay the necessary price to restore them to God. This is the message that He gave to the world at the appointed time.7And I tell you truly that I was appointed an apostle to proclaim this truth, to teach the true faith to the Gentiles. This is no exaggeration!8So I want everyone everywhere to lift up their hands to the Holy One in prayer, without any anger or disagreements in their hearts.Appropriate behaviour for women9Women should dress modestly; their whole appearance should be decent and proper. There is no need for them to have elaborate hair styles, nor to adorn themselves with gold or pearls. Neither do they need to wear expensive clothes.10It is far better that attention is on their behaviour, to ensure this is appropriate so they are seen to be women of God who honour Him.11Women should learn with quiet and fully submissive hearts.12I personally do not allow a woman to teach men or exercise authority over them; she should remain silent in the public meeting.13-14God created Adam first and then Eve, and it was the woman who was first deceived by the devil and so became a sinner.15However, women are to accept that they are called to be mothers who continue to walk in faith, love and holiness, being modest in their appearance and behaviour.

  • S.O.A.P.

In order to go further in the mission God has given us, He said we need to go deeper in our relationship with Him. As with any tree or plant, the fruit is determined by the health and depth of the root. One way we have been going deeper is by reading and journaling through the Word every day. We’ve called it S.O.A.P.

    [S]cripture - Read the Word
[O]bservation - Write down what God is saying/showing you
[A]pplication - How do we apply this in our lives?
[P]rayer - Pray through and over your life

As we read the Word (Scripture), listen to the Holy Spirit (Observation), discover how to apply that to our lives (Application) and pray these things over our lives and those in the Church (Prayer) we’re going deeper in our relationship with God so that we can go further in the mission He’s given us.

Throughout the rest of the year we’ll be continuing our Bible Reading Plan to press deeper into God so that we can go further in His purposes. Get yourself a Bible, a journal and a pen and SOAP your way through the scriptures!

You can see which chapters we’re reading today above this section.
